October is National Fire Prevention Month, which is perfect timing because it’s also traditionally the start of “wildfire season” in much of the South, including here in the Palmetto State. But not this year... we’re canceling it.
Taking our cue from the larger social culture, the South Carolina Forestry Commission is appropriating one of the most pervasive terms of our time – CANCEL – and redirecting its aim to something truly deserving of elimination: WILDFIRES.
At least those caused by humans, which are about 90% of all wildfires. While natural wildfire causes – lightning, for instance – can never be eliminated, we can absolutely do something about the overwhelming majority of blazes that destroy our forests, wildlife, property and natural scenic beauty. The three scenarios below account for most preventable wildfires; learn the steps YOU can take to prevent them – and the 10,000 acres on average that they burn every year – in our state.
Escaped debris burns are the #1 cause of wildfires in South Carolina. This carelessness accounted for nearly 60% of all SC wildfires in FY2021-22.
